Interpret the quote: "Some laws are better than others.") (Eg."  I just saw the Hunger Games. Like the book it is based on, it is a philosophical and political film and it is a dystopia film. Here, you can share your thoughts, keeping in mind that the film has drawn varying interpretations for its political overtones, including arguments in favor of left-wing, right-wing, and libertarian viewpoints. The film displays a general distrust of government, regardless of the audience's political party affiliation.  Some viewers formed an opinion about The Hunger Games as a parable of the Occupy Wall Street activity.  The top 1% richest people in the world have more money than the bottom 95% put together! Collins doesn't use the terms 1% and 99% percent, but it's clear that those in the Capitol are members of the 1% and everyone in the Panem districts is part of the 99..."

The FDA has yet to approve one single non-toxic treatment for cancer or anything that isn't patented by a major pharmaceutical company. Some would say this is terrorism, your thoughts?

 In class we discussed the following today:
1. CEO of Schizophrenia Society of Canada tells people he would definitely have Greyhound bus killer Vince Li over to his house & around his family and that this man is no longer a threat to society and should be free. Do you agree? He beheaded and ate his victim 3 years ago. 
2. The Canadian National Museum of Science and Technology has a controversial exhibit on sex. Is this inappropriate for a museum that cators to so many children? 

 

Should the federal, provincial and Ontario governments say “yes” or “no” to auto industry requests for financial assistance to expand plants? For example, Ford, which wants to invest $1.2 billion to expand in Oakville is expected to seek about 20% in financial help from governments.

1.  Yes. We don’t have much choice. If we don’t cough up assistance, other jurisdictions in the US and elsewhere will. Targeting government assistance is the best way to create jobs.
2.  No. We should be cutting corporate taxes for all industry to the lowest levels in North America, if not the world. Governments can’t choose winners and losers.
3.  No. We can’t afford to cut corporate taxes further, and we should not be giving taxpayers money out to industry. It’s corporate welfare!

 In the USA, the Supreme court has protected the rights of anti-gay protesters who continue to attend the funerals of US soldiers who were gay where they chant "God hates fags" and hold signs that read: "God hates fags" "God hates America" and God if your enemey." Do you agree with their right to freedom of expression? Explain. Do you agree with the statement "The Supreme Court is noble." Or do you agree with the sentence, "The Supreme Court is noble in theory." What are your general philosophies on "freedom of speech, expression, and slander (Katie Homes for example recently launched a lawsuit against the tabloids for saying that she was addicted to drugs. She will most likely lose the lawsuit).
